Date-Rape and Date-Rape Drugs

Date-rape drugs are a new threat that have emerged recently at highschool parties, nightclubs, campuses etc.

What are date-rape drugs?

Any substance that that makes you unable to say "no" or physically unable to resist having a sexual encounter.

What kind of drugs are "date-rape drugs?"

These can include: alcohol, marijuana or other street drugs, club drugs like ecstacy. Over the counter sleeping pills and anithistamines or cold medications. However, usually the term Date-Rape drug usually means the drug Rohypnol which is Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) and Ketamine Hydrochloride.

Rohypnol is manufactured by Hoffman-La Roche and prescribed as a sleeping pill in countries outside of the USA. It is a short-term treatment for insomnia, a sedative hypnotic and a pre-anesthetic. It is similar to Valium but is approx. 10 times more potent! It is also used commonly with other drugs such as Heroin, Cocaine and alcohol. Common names for it are: rophies, R2, roofenol, roche, roachies, la rocha, rope, rib, circles, mexican valium, roach-2, roopies and ropies.

The more you know, the better prepared you are to protect yourself!!

The reason that these types of drugs are so desirable to sexual predators is because they are virtually undectable-meaning that they are tasteless, odorless and colorless. Basically, all traces of the drug will leave your system within 72 hours after ingestion and are not found on any routine toxicology screen or blood test. Doctors and police have to be looking specifically for them in order to find them.

They are usually slipped into drinks or food and are fast acting. They make the victim unconscious but responsive with little or no memory of what happens while the drug is active in their system. They limit the victim's inhibitions both sexually and physically, meaning that you will probably do things you wouldn't ordinarily do while on these drugs. You can't think clearly and are very passive. Many times you are unaware that you have even been raped...though you might have some suspicion.

Some clear signs that sexual activity has taken place even if you have no memory of it..

1. Drug effects of sick, flu like symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme fatigue (tiredness) for days.

2. Soreness or bruising in the genital area or anal area.

3. Bruising on the inner and / or outer thighs, wrists, forearms, defensive bruising or scratching (like during a struggle.)

4. Semen or vaginal fluids on you, the bed or furniture around you. A condom in the wastebasket or nearby.

5. Gossip from other people about your behavior or having lucid dreams about sexual activity or hallucinations about it. No clear memory or memory lapses during a 8-24 hr period.

6. Stories from others about how intoxicated you were when you know that you had not taken any drugs.

What to do if this happens to you

First of all, if you suspect you have been raped, go to a hospital and get tested for a date rape drug. Time is crucial. The staff should know what to test for and look for. You can do it!!

Second, here are some ways to keep yourself safe from these kind of drugs:

Don't allow anyone to buy you a drink or bring you a drink.

Don't leave your drink alone. Always keep your eye on it. Don't turn your back on it., especially in a large group of people or at a party.

Try to drink out of bottles or cans. It is more difficult to slip a drug in a bottle or can than into a glass!

The best thing you can do is pass the word around to your friends!

Knowledge is power!!We have to all empower eachother and Fight back

The more you know about something, the more power you have!

Stay safe my friends and pass on the wisdom you have learned!

If you think you may have been raped with the help of a date-rape drug, go and get help immediately! There are people who will help you and understand and care about you. I promise.

Knowledge is power! Pass it on!!
