Art-supplies for Art-Therapy Painting

First, when getting Art-supplies, you can either go to a craft store or discount store, (look in yellow pages), OR you can order online and possibly save some money.

You simply Google "Discount craft stores" on the front page of this webiste, and names of stores are displayed to choose from. This is what I do and I have found it does save some money and is easier than driving around in traffic.

If you just don't ever get outside because you are depressed, it would be good for you to go shopping for you Art-supplies at a neighborhood store, just to get the fresh air!

I would advise taking a list with you of what you will need.

You can get whatever kind of canvas you want for Art-Therapy. I would recommend something inexpensive such as board canvas. This is the cheapest, best for beginners, and can be framed if you wish to compare it to your paintings later in recovery.

These are in all sizes and I would get a pretty large size approximately 24"x 36', or whatever comes close to that. Stretched canvas can get pretty expensive..so it is really your decision. If you have a lot of money, get a large stretched canvas! For our purposes, it really isn't necessary.

second, you need paints. I use acryllics because they are the easiest to paint with..at least to me, and they also mix and dry well.

I would buy at least eight colors of whatever brand is on sale. If certain colors speak to you, then get those. Otherwise, I would get: black, white, red, yellow, green, blue, purple and orange. These are basic colors and can mix the best..again, my preference.

Next, you need brushes. There should be a sign that says "brushes for acryllics". I would buy one larger size and one smaller size. You really don't need more than that, for now.

lastly, you need a palate. A palate is a kind of round plastic flat thing that you will squirt the paint on and mix it on.

The only other two things you will need are a cloth rag and a small container of water for brush dipping. (I put water in an old coffee cup.)

I would also put on some older clothes that you don't care about getting messy. (I get messy when doing this). For when those abuse emotions start surfacing and you start slinging the paint!!

Recap: canvas,paint,brushes,palate,water,cloth and YOU!
